10/21/08 – bargain buys from Whole Foods

By Jesse on October 20, 2008

Winos,

To many young people, Whole Foods is the LA grocery scene’s version of the proverbial double-edged sword.  On the one hand, its bountiful selection of healthy and delicious comestibles rivals that of Winos stalwart Trader Joe’s (while certain departments, such as produce and made-to-order, are unequivocally superior).  On the other hand, the advantages come with a price, and it’s a hefty one: the WF does not have a reputation as the ideal destination for the youthful libertine on a budget.  With respect those two grocery categories most near to a Young Wino’s heart — wine and cheese — your average Whole Foods may have an edge over the Teedge in terms of selection, but can’t compete on the value scale.  Or so we thought…

On Tuesday night, the Winos will be tasting through a selection of budget-priced bottles from the Whole Foods store over on National.  We’ll be joined by the Director of Marketing and the Head of Wine Sales from that location, both of whom are eager to hear our thoughts on a few bottles that they hope will keep you coming back for more.  No one will bring wine this week, since our tasting lineup will be provided by our guests; instead, please plan to bring $10 for the collection plate (which allows the hard working members of the Wino executive committee to keep making evenings like this one possible).

We’ll be meeting at Newsha’s place in Venice.  The RSVP system functions like this: if you want in, you send me an e-mail the same day you received this one. Spots are assigned based on a complex algorithm which gives priority to long-term members but also reserves seats at each and every meeting for new people.  If you’re denied entry due to a meeting exceeding capacity, don’t worry — you’ll be at the top of the list the next week.  We try to keep everyone satisfied, and we think we do a pretty good job.

Once you’ve received your confirmation e-mail, check your wallets to make sure you have ten dollars, and put your drinking caps on.  We’ll see all of you discriminating buyers on Tuesday night at 9:00!
